The Australian Dental Council Exam (ADC Exam) is a multi-stage assessment process designed to evaluate the competency of overseas-trained dentists who wish to practice dentistry in Australia. It’s important to note that there are actually two separate sets of assessments, one for Dentists and one for Dental Specialists.

Here’s a breakdown of the common ADC Exam for Dentists:

Stages:

  1. Initial Assessment: This first stage confirms your eligibility to take the written exam by verifying your dental qualifications, work experience, and registration history.
  2. Written Examination: This two-day, computer-based exam tests your knowledge and clinical judgement through multiple-choice questions specific to Australian dental practice.
  3. Practical Examination: If you pass the written exam, you can move on to this two-day simulation-based assessment where you demonstrate your practical clinical skills in dentistry.
  • To be eligible for the initial assessment, you must generally:
  • Hold a four-year, full-time university dental degree or diploma from a recognized university.
  • Have held full and unrestricted registration or license to practice dentistry in your home country or country of training.
  • Be in good standing with your dental regulatory body.

No, you do not have to travel to Australia for the ADC initial assessment or Part 1 of the ADC exams. Both the initial assessment and Part 1 of the ADC exams can be completed online.

The initial assessment is an entirely online process. You will need to submit your application and supporting documentation through the ADC Connect online portal. Once your application is received, the ADC will assess your eligibility to sit for the written examination.

Part 1 of the ADC exams, the written examination, is also conducted online. You will need to sit for the exam at a Pearson VUE test center that offers online proctoring. There are Pearson VUE test centers located all over the world, so you should be able to find one that is convenient for you.
